Don’t miss the upcoming LegalTech New York – Advanced IT Track, sponsored by ILTA.  Especially this session about iPads:

iLove for the iPad: Tips, Tricks & Apps
The iPad has become an incredible mobile tool for lawyers, but it can often be a challenge for IT departments. But there’s no denying the fact that the iPad is becoming part of the contemporary legal technology tool belt. In the first part of this session, we’ll explore how the iPad can be integrated into a law practice and discuss security, infrastructure, and compatibility. In the second part of this session, we’ll go into “app-overload” and cover legal apps, note-taking apps, signature apps, PDF apps, office apps, and even some fun apps. This session is for everyone that needs to learn more about how the iPad can benefit legal professionals.

Speakers:
Brett Burney, Burney Consultants
David Neesen, CIO, Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP

Monday, January 30, 2012 from 10:30 am – 11:45 am

Apple has released iOS 5 for iPad users.

Personally, I’m most excited about the new iMessaging service and the ability for conversations to take place across multiple iDevices. What’s your favorite new feature? Let us know in the comment section.

New features in iOS 5 for iPad users are:

  • Notification Center
  • iMessage
  • Newsstand
  • Reminders
  • Twitter (integrated into iOS)
  • Safari Reading List
  • Wireless Updates (finally!)
  • Multitasking Gestures

You can get the obtain the update by connecting their devices to iTunes and clicking the “Check for Update” button. It may take a while before the update is available to everyone. If you’re having trouble getting the update to appear make sure you are running iTunes 10.5, it is required to update to iOS 5.

Get it while it’s hot!

In a nice post on The Lawyerist.com, Sam Glover concludes that the iPad might not be a complete replacement for hard-core document drafting on a computer, but it’s better for just about everything else.

In his post, Glover, an admitted “iFanboy,” highlights the iPad’s portability, speed, and great apps as primary reasons for it’s utility for lawyers.

He also points out, with some examples, how the iPad doesn’t exactly replace mainstream word processing applications, like Microsoft Word.

Finally, Glover gets into some good detail about how he uses cloud storage and file syncing service, DropBox to easily get files on and off the device.  We like DropBox, too.  If you don’t yet have an account, you can get 2GB of free DropBox storage here.

News of the iPad2 release day sellout is all over the web. It seems the inability to pre-order the iPad2 prior  to launch day has contributed significantly to the lack of availability of Apple’s latest must have device. Was the omission of pre-orders for the iPad2 just another ploy by Apple to increase demand while they control the supply. Continue reading »

Sir Richard Branson, best known perhaps for being known (but also for launching 400 or so companies) and for envelope pushing, has launched an iPad-only magazine called Project.  The app is free, but individual issues (either the U.K., U.S., or Canadian versions) will cost you $2.99 a pop.

The first thing you’ll notice is that Project is not simply a magazine that displays on the iPad.  That would have been cool enough.  Rather, right from the cover, you realize that this will be a different experience.  Play the 18 second cover video (link after the break) and you’ll see what I mean.  The cover may not offer much in terms of utility, or information, but it announces, in a quasi-futuristic way that this is not your father’s glossy old magazine from the mid 2010s. In a recent interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, former President George W. Bush declared himself to be a former BlackBerry person, but now he’s an “iPad person.”  You can see the entire video interview on Mashable.

Skip to 6:00 in the video to get right to the iPad person comment.  Bush also wants you to buy his new book, Decision Points, in both print and electronic version.  The book doesn’t appear to be in the iBook Store yet, but you can buy it on Amazon and read it on the Kindle App.   And please stay tuned to see Bush fist bump Zuckerberg – it’s classic (fast forward to 14:25 to see it).
